Rogue State of Israel XVI : Licenced to Lie Cheat Kill?

  • At 07:45 GMT today, 1,815 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of Israel's Operation Protective Edge on July 8. According to the Gaza health ministry the deaths includes 401 children, 238 women and 74 elders. Children make up for 31 of civilan casualties.
And 9,406 people have also been injured;  including: 2805 children, 1823 women and 343 elders.
The death toll on the Israeli side includes 64 Israeli soldiers and three civilians, including a Thai national.
  • 64 israelenses morreram, dentre eles, 61 soldados e três civis.

Tinha razão, pois a "trégua" durou pouquinho.

This morning Israel announced it will be holding its fire in parts of Gaza for seven hours amid world outrage over the deadly strike on a UN school in the Palestinian territory.
The limited and unilateral truce came after world powers fiercely condemned the attack that left 10 Palestinians sheltering at a school dead, as Israel was pulling some of its troops from Gaza.
Hamas spokesperon went to the radio to warn Gazans: We don't trust this truce and we call to our people to exercise caution". "This unilateral act is designed to divert attention from Israel's acts of slaughter".
Which was true. The so called truce didin't lart long and was very selective. It was only for propaganda.
This fifth deadly attack on a United Nations school sheltering people fleeing bombardment in Gaza was strongly condemned by both the UN and the US on Sunday, with UN chief Ban Ki-Moon calling it a "moral outrage and a criminal act" and pleading for an end to "this madness".
The US said it was appalled by the "disgraceful" (nob "barbaric") attack, which killed at least 10 people and injured dozens just days after the shelling of two other UN schools in Gaza caused international shock and anger.
A hospital near the site of the attack, in the southern town of Rafah, was overwhelmed with the dead and injured. Children's bodies were stored in an ice-cream freezer as the morgue ran out of room.
It was, said Ban, "yet another gross violation of international humanitarian law, which clearly requires protection by both parties of Palestinian civilians, UN staff and UN premises, among other civilian facilities". He called for a swift investigation, saying "those responsible [must be] held accountable. It is a moral outrage and a criminal act. The IDF had been "repeatedly informed of the location of these sites", Ban added.
In an unusually severe statement, the US state department called on Israel to do "more to meet its own standards and avoid civilian casualties". Which standards, Obama? Of occupation, slaughtering and ethnic cleansing? No kidding.
And of course the Israeli military said it was investigating the incident, and added that "preliminary inquiries had shown that its forces were targeting a number of terrorists on a motorbike near the school, and we did identify a successful hit on a motorbike"
No, really! And the world will just have to take this new lie for granted and shut up?

BRAVO, Brasil!

In a series of coordinated diplomatic and financial measures, Latin America is making a stand, heavily criticising Israel and cutting ties with the Jewish state. It began with Brazil and now El Salvador, Chile, Peru, Ecuador have all recalled their ambassadors, while Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay and Paraguay have suspended the Free Trade Agreement talks, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
In a joint statement they called for an end to the "disproportionate use of force by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip which in the majority affects civilians, including children and women."
Israel's foreign ministry said it was disappointed with the recalling of ambassadors - and that such actions only encourage Hamas "a group recognised as a terror organisation by many countries around the world".
But the foreign ministry also made light of the measures, calling Brazil a "diplomatic dwarf", and even joking about our semifinal loss in the Worl Cup.
President Dilma Rouseff responded by saying: "Brazil was the first country to recognise Israel. Brazil is a friend to Israel... but there is a massacre ongoing in the Gaza Strip."
Uruguay and Argentina, which have large Jewish communities with israeli lobbies that control their governments like AIPAC controls the White House, have not followed suit, keeping their ambassadors in Israel, for the time being. Colombia and Mexico are also maintaining diplomatic relations, as both countries are used to folloing US lead.
But the stand by many in Latin America is being seen as a departure - and is being hailed by many there and in Europe who are proud that the region is taking a stand that others may follow. Thanks to the "diplomatic dwarf"
.

"It’s a controversy as old as the fifth century BC. “Man is the measure of all things,” said Protagoras. No, replied Plato. Nothing imperfect can be the measure of anything. And there we have the essence of a philosophical squabble about the possibility of human objectivity that is as alive in modern newsrooms as it was in the Athenian agora. For when a visibly shaken Jon Snow stepped out from behind the supposed neutrality of his newsreader’s desk to present a piece to camera on his recent trip to Gaza, it felt like he was crossing a journalistic fourth wall, thus allowing the audience to recognise his anger, his passion and his opinion.
“I can’t get these images out of my mind,” said Snow, describing a small girl he met in hospital, “terribly crippled by shrapnel that had penetrated her spine.” Was that objective, some asked?
Well, I admit it: I have been losing my cool. During the week, I decided that it didn’t make sense for me to write about Gaza any more. I was no longer interested in sitting calmly at my desk turning out more apparently ordered sentences, purporting to run smoothly from one solid proposition to another. At times, I feel shut down by the sheer horror of it all, encased in some bitter despondency, unable properly to process the frustration.
And then, by contrast, I worry that I am going to blurt out something that I will come to regret. Maybe I did that in this column last week, floating the possibility of what I called “just terrorism”. My friend, UN spokesman Chris Gunness, broke down during an Al-Jazeera interview. He managed the words “the injustice of it all is enough to make any heart burst” before he sank sobbing into his hands, unable to say any more.
On yesterday morning, the Guardian’s leader-writing team were talking together, entirely calmly and sensibly, about the way forward: we discussed Binyamin Netanyahu’s inaction, lost opportunities for peace, the problem of attack tunnels. But my mind wandered off and the conversation became distant chatter. All this being cool about it didn’t work for me. I think of the remains of that two-year-old boy that our Jerusalem correspondent Peter Beaumont was presented with in a plastic bag. And the kids packed into that UN school, sleeping on mattresses, expecting that a blue flag would keep them safe. My focal point wouldn’t extend past that horror. I see it up close and personal.
I know that traditional journalism prides itself on maintaining a strict firewall between objective and subjective, between news and comment. The New York Times, for instance, has a separate management structure for each for precisely this reason. But isn’t this just a convenient fiction? I want the paper to write, in big bold capital letters: we hate this fucking stupid pointless war. “Reason is a slave to the passions,” as David Hume famously once put it.
I know, I know: this sort of emotion is not going to solve anything. But in the midst of unimaginable suffering, the idea of calm objectivity feels like a desperate attempt to maintain some thin veneer of civilisation protecting us from the total futility of it all. And when Netanyahu’s spokesman, Mark Regev, comes on the radio, intoning that false, calm sympathy straight out of the PR handbook, I want to scream. And the double frustration is that screaming is generally understood to be what you do when you have lost the argument. Whereas I can’t shake the feeling that, in these circumstances, screaming is the most rational thing to do.
Being calmly rational about dead children feels like a very particular form of madness. Whatever else journalistic objectivity is, it surely cannot be the elimination of human emotion. If we don’t recognise that, we are not describing the full picture."
Gilles Frazier, The Guardian
Channel 4, Jon Snow
sous-titré en français

"Faced by the horrors of Gaza, Guardian columnist Giles Fraser last week urged reporters to show more emotion, condemning calm rationality in the face of the slaughter as “a particular form of madness”. This is a dangerous path. Emotion is the stuff of propaganda, and news is against propaganda. Reporting should privilege the emotional responses of audiences, not indulge journalists.
At the same time, from a slightly different direction, Jon Snow used a Channel 4 studio, but not the channel itself, to show how reporting from Gaza had emotionally affected him. His call on YouTube was for engagement from his audience, promising “Together we can make a difference”...
In his appeal, Snow said the world had shown it was not that interested in the death of children in Gaza. Almost three-quarters of a million hits showed that many were interested. But how did they know enough to care? Not from reporters who had put their emotions on show. Instead, the horrors of Gaza have been bravely narrated by reporters fully equipped with compassion and empathy, but not wallowing in their own feelings.
The piece that inspired Giles Fraser to his incoherent appeal that “screaming is the most rational thing to do” – Peter Beaumont’s description of a father gathering the remains of his baby son in a carrier bag – is not reported emotionally. Instead, the writing is poetic in its spare intensity. “ ‘This is my son,’ he said and nothing else, tears tracking down his face.” The missile that entered the house made a hole “the size of a toaster”. The domestic details take us there, and when we arrive, we find Beaumont, one of the finest reporters of his generation, to be a helpful guide, not an obstacle. He is not in our way telling us how he feels.
This kind of reporting has an honourable pedigree... News organisations are responding with different ways of editing material gathered by non-professionals, as well as new ways of storytelling.
But Snow’s YouTube appeal carried an implicit message that is more threatening, at least to TV news, than Fraser’s call for emotional reporting. He considered that he could deliver this only online since it might contravene rules governing impartiality in news programmes...
Ronald Reagan’s abolition of the fairness doctrine contributed to a significant weakening of TV news in the US, releasing a flood of ignorance – a salutary warning to those campaigning for an end to impartiality rules here in order to encourage reporters to be more emotionally engaged".
