International Women's Day was celebrated last week, March 8th. It is commonly associated with advancements for the role of women in the workplace and workers' rights and protections.
In the West Bank, leading feminist and imprisoned polititian Khalida Jarrar released a statement from jail to mark IWD. Jarrar was sentenced to 15 months in an Israeli prison last year after she signed a plea deal admitting membership in an 'illegal' organization, the political faction she belongs to as an elected official in the Palestinian government.
Here is her message from HaSharon prison in northern Israel curtesy of her lawyer Hanan al-Khatib:
On this day, Palestinian women mark this occasion in light of the crimes of the occupation against Palestinian women, children, elders and youth.
This year, our call focuses on the freedom and self-determination of our people, and the freedom and self-determination of Palestinian women: achieving equality and liberation, and ending all forms of oppression and injustice committed against them. We stand as part of a global struggle with all the world’s women freedom fighters: against injustice, exploitation and oppression.”
Khalida is a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, which is seated in the West Bank city of Ramallah, though generally considered a defunct body as elections have not been held in more than a decade. Jarrar took office in 2006 as a member of the Ali Abu Mustafa party, an offshoot of the secular and socialist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
She ran on the Ali Abu Mustafa list and not with PFLP as means to skirt possible Israeli prosecution for belonging to a banned group. Under hte code of Israeli military occupation, membership to any political party is strictly forbidden, which is a conundrum for any Palestinian politician holding office even those whose maintain formal channels with the Israeli government. However, generally Palestinian belonging to the ruling party Fatah are not charged with membership in an illegal organization, a crime all Palestinian politicians are guilty of under the most literal interpretation of the law.
Leaders like Khalida who are affiliated with groups that have a history of resistence are more exposed to prosecution. She has not been charged for any criminal activity, other than representing her constituents.

No dia 8 de março, em Nabi Saleh, à 1:30 da madrugada, um batalhão inteiro da IDF invadiu a casa Manal Tamimi, de 43 anos, mãe de seis filhos, para sequestrá-la (como faziam os milicos do Cone Sul durante as ditaduras, e faziam os nazistas durante da Segunda Guerra. On the International Women’s Day, 8th of March, at 1:30 AM, dozens of soldiers stormed Manal’s home, raided it and detained her family in one room, while female Israeli soldiers have taken Manal to another room in the house, thoroughly inspected her, then kidnapped her.
Coordinator of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee (PSCC), Munther Amira strongly denounced the kidnap, calling it a new Israeli crime against women, especially taking place on international women’s day: "This act displays the Israeli brutality against all values of freedom and democracy, and against all women, and Palestinian women in particular".
PSCC demanded all women’s associations and human rights organizations to expose Israeli crimes against women and focus on Manal’s case at the moment.
The two close relatives from the family, Ahed and Wa’ad Al-Tamimi have repeatedly stood up for Israeli soldiers during demonstrations.
Two days laters, the Ofer Israeli military court near Ramallah, agreed to release Manal after two days of detention, on a fine of 4,000 shekels (approx $1,000), and other restrictions.
Restrictions include that Manal does not publish any Facebook posts or photos about one of the Israeli border guards named Yousef Nasser Eddin, who complained that she shared a video of him violently attacking Palestinian paramedics and journalists during clashes near Beit El checkpoint, north of Ramallah, back in October 2015.
Manal was also conditioned not to direct any “virtual threats” against any of the Israeli officers.
On Wednesday, the court decided to extend Manal’s arrest until Friday 11 March 2016.
Manal, prominent activist against the wall and settlements, and mother of six, was part of Popular Struggle Coordination Committee, which presents community-based resistance rooted in a belief in the power of nonviolent struggle, taking various forms, such as strikes, protests, and legal campaigns, as well as supporting the call to Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.
Manal and her family have maintained a high-profile in nonviolent popular resistance. However, she was unable to participate in Nabi Saleh’s weekly demonstration during the past three weeks, because she developed a bad allergy towards teargas which was fired intensely towards activists.
She was shot and injured in her legs twice before, in 2013 and 2015.

Laars é o embaixador da União Européia em Israel.
Laars virou o demônio entre os invasores israelenses por estar prestando socorro às famílias de beduínos palestinos cujas casas a IDF tem demolido nos últimos meses.
Laars ajuda e não fica mudo. Denuncia os roubos que Israel vem fazendo da ajuda humanitária que é enviada à Palestina. Desvios de dinheiro internacional que serve a financiar a ocupação. Nem mais nem menos.
De fato, como diz no Counterpunchetinians-ends-up-in-israels-coffers/ , só em 2013, a Autoridade Palestina denunciou uma pilhagem israelense de no mínimo US$3.4 bilhões que vão parar nos cofres de Tel Aviv (os mesmos que guardam o dinheiro de Eduardo Campos?). Além dos 3 bilhões de dólares em armamento que Israel recebe anualmente de Washington.
Uma pesquisa internacional publicou na semana passada que Israel é o oitavo país mais poderoso do planeta, apesar de posar de coitado. Graças também à limpeza étnica que vem realizando na Palestina, já que, além do roubo de terra e recursos naturais, extravia para seus cofres pelo menos 78 por cento da assistência humanitária enviada à Palestina.
Dinheiro destinado aos palestinos e que acaba mesmo é financiando a continuação de sua desgraça. E o incrível é que Israel ficou viciado e dependende da assistência financeira enviada às suas vítimas (um pouco como o carcereiro que come a comida que é enviada a seu prisioneiro, mais a dele, insaciável).
O especialista em Direito internacional Richard Falk diz que Israel aproveita do fato de não haver nenhuma exigência que os doadores se assegurem que o dinheiro chegará ao legítimo destinatário.
Mas Bruxelas está acordando. Após as calúnias e ameaças que os invasores judeus fizeram a Laars, a UE ousou apontar para quem deveria bancar a ajuda aos beduínos - Israel, o algoz que além de fazer vítimas, lucra com isso surrupiando o dinheiro destinado às famílias que a IDF despossuiu.

Um novo documentário produzido pela ONG de Direitos Humanos Al Mezan prova a intenção de Israel de aniquilar a assistência e o serviço médicoi durante a peração Protective Edge em Gaza, em 2014. No total, 24 ambulâncias e 70 postos de saúde foram total ou parcialmente danificados; 11 motoristas de ambulância e para-médicos foram assassinados durante os 51 dias de bombardeios. A new documentary produced by Al Mezan Center for Human Rights in Gaza, shows the devastation Israel’s 2014 bombardment of Gaza caused to medical and rescue teams.
In the documentary, which can be viewed below, three medics recall incidents during which their colleagues came under attack.
In total, 11 ambulance drivers and civil defense workers were killed during Israel’s 51 days of aerial bombing and ground invasion.
Twenty-four ambulances and 70 medical facilities were damaged or destroyed.
In many cases, ambulances and facilities appear to have been directly targeted despite having provided their coordinates to the Israeli army.
“International law is crystal clear concerning its inviolable protection of health facilities and workers, including ambulances,” says Al Mezan representative, noting that Palestinian ambulances are well marked in colors agreed with Israel.
Al Mezan submitted complaints to the Israeli authorities demanding a credible investigation into what appear to be targeted attacks on medical facilities and personnel.
The Israeli military has opened two investigations into the killing of ambulance drivers in separate attacks on 25 July 2014.
However, to date only one instance of an apparent direct attack on a medical facility has prompted the military to open a criminal file. That case was only opened after media reports exposed the deliberate shelling of a clinic in the Shujaiya neighborhood of Gaza City.
A senior military officer ordered the shelling to avenge the killing of an Israeli soldier the previous day.
